These are the first words spoken by Gilbert Frazier, an Ulster-Scots emigrant who left the countryside between Coleraine and Londonderry in April 1723, and sailed with his wife Nelly to Philadelphia. Gilbert was the key character in the novel The Wilderness; or, Braddocks TImes – a Tale of the West, which was published in New York in 1823.

It was written by James MHenry who was born in Larne on 20 December 1785. He studied medicine at Glasgow University, while there he published a poem about the 1798 Rebellion – which he would have witnessed as a teenage boy – entitled Patrick: A Poetical Tale of 1798 published by McKenzie, Glasgow 1810. MHenry returned to Co Antrim and became a doctor in Larne in 1811 – he then moved to Belfast in 1814 and emigrated to Pennsylvania in 1817. He lived there for 25 years during which time he became one of the most celebrated writers and novelists of his generation. In 1842 he returned to Ulster and became American Consul in Londonderry, a post he retained until his death on 21 July 1845.

MHenrys characters were predominantly Ulster-Scots – in the preface of Hearts of Steel 1825 he wrote that “the majority of actors in both works belonged to the population of Ulster; the lower and middle classes of whom speak a dialect very similar to that spoken by the Scotch Lowlanders, from whom they are mostly descended”. When Lady Morgan /�Sydney Owensons 1806 novel The Wild Irish Girl characterised Ulster as follows “…?this part of Ireland may in some respects be considered as a Scottish colony; and in fact, Scotch dialect, Scotch manners, Scotch modes, and the Scotch character almost universally prevail…” he may have been pleased by her recognition of the cultural distinctiveness, but when the description went on to attack the “chill”, “calculating industry” and “luxury” of Ulster he was far from happy. He responded to Owenson, again via the preface of Hearts of Steel. Have a read at the bottom of page vi and the top of page vii – doubtless she was one of the “tribe of romance writers who have… spread this false notion of the Irish character which has gone abroad through the world. That these writers in general knew extremely little of the people they undertook to describe is evident…”.

Chapter Two of The Hearts of Steelhas been described as a “tour de force” – the deathbed scene of an old farmer called John Rainey. The language is marvellous – this chapter was featured in Frank Fergusons Anthology of Ulster-Scots Writing Four Courts Press 2008.

MHenry has also been described as a “personal friend and ardent admirer” of another great east Antrim man, President Andrew Jackson and in 1829 published a poem entitled “Jacksons Wreath”. James MHenry was a hugely significant figure of his generation, regarded as the first “Irish-American” novelist and deserves to be better known in Ulster today. Like so much of Ulster-Scots heritage MHenry has been forgotten and ignored. Nobody is sure where he was buried – his brief entry in the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography says he died at Larne. A blue plaque either near Larne if his birthplace or even grave could be traced or the site of the former Consuls premises in Londonderry should be considered.

If MHenry were alive today, he might even have been featured in an episode of “Jackies the Boy”.

Police are investigating an attack on an Orange hall in Rasharkin, County Antrim.

Scorch damage was discovered on the front of the hall on Main Street at 0955 BST. The remains of a bottle were found at the scene.

Police are appealing to anyone who has information to contact them.

North Antrim DUP MLA Mervyn Storey has condemned the attack.

“This is yet another sectarian attack on the Protestant minority of the village. It comes following a long list of attacks,” he said.

“Normally we are told by republicans that it is band parades that cause them concern yet it seems they even have a difficulty with bricks and mortar and a building that does not speak or move, yet even this inanimate building is not even acceptable to narrow minded republicans.

“Sinn Fein have failed to give leadership over the summer to reduce tension and have failed to create the circumstances where there is an acceptance of a Protestant identity that can live free of these attacks.”

No, its not about certain aspects of present-day Ulster-Scots activity although you may feel that it could be, but is instead an excerpt from the football fanzine / magazine When Saturday Comes. Football isnt rocket science, and frankly its not that important even though I enjoy it immensely however WSC has recently published two pieces ripping apart how even something as trivial as football coverage has been dumbed down. This article is about former Soccer AM presenter Tim Lovejoy, and this one is about the dire James Cordens World Cup programmes that dominated ITVs coverage of this years tournament.

Here are a few excerpts from the Corden article: ?”…a thickening culture of bullish arrogance, absolute pride in not thinking. This idea that its all a laugh. Its eating away at everything now, and its only getting worse…?”Lovely stuff” barked Corden, banging his cards on the desk. Somewhere in Britain, another library closed…

…?no idea of his own limitations, never sensing when people are sick of him… underneath the insecure bluster, he may even be a nice guy… what he has to realise now, as he weeps over Englands exit, is that hes part of the problem. Sure, its only a laugh but this overbearing oafishness bolsters the culture which has England stinking out one tournament after another, bullishly arrogant, proud of not thinking. Corden would probably scoff at the thought, but I guess you have a different perspective when youre making a career of it…”

ULSTER’S rich aviation heritage was given its own permanent base yesterday.
Supporters say that Magilligan Point near Limavady is the perfect location for the new museum, which features rare photos, documents and fuselage from the wreckage of aircrafts and, bizarrely, memorabilia from Richard Branson’s doomed hot-air balloon.

The first woman to fly across the Atlantic touched down in Londonderry in 1932.

And as a proud Norman Thorpe revealed, the museum is based “at the very location where Harry Ferguson took to the skies in 1909″, making many flights from Magilligan strand.

Mr Thorpe, who is the secretary of the Shackleton and Aviation Museum, said he hoped the new centre would open up the “vast history of aircarft” to tourists and the wider public.

“This museum really focuses on the 22 World War Two airfields across Northern Ireland, but there is also so much more besides,” he said.

Visitors will be entralled by many of the more unusual stories at the museum, which include the dramatic rescue of 10 survivors from a Russian factory ship in 1991, who were flown by helicopters from Scotland to Ballykelly and then on to Altnagelvin hospital in Londonderry.

For Mr Thorpe and his fellow enthusiasts, it has been a “long journey and a lot of hard work to get here to this day”.

“We are all thrilled and very proud to have our very own museum.

“I think the more people find out about this unique history, the more amazed they will be.”

Famous people to have touched down in Londonderry include Amelia Earhart who landed in Ballyarnett in 1932.

General Italo Balbo and 24 flying boats of the Italian Air Force made a scheduled refuelling stop in Lough Foyle in 1933 and Virgin Boss Richard Branson touched down outside Limavady in a hot air balloon in 1987.

Founded in 2009 by Norman and Sylvia Thorpe, Dave Bishop and Kathleen Bishop, the local Shackleton group – named after the famous Irish explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton – quickly assembled a dedicated group of friends and relatives.

With the Eglinton Flying Club, The Ulster Gliding Club, and other aviation enthusiasts on board, the group soon assembled the stunning collection of artefacts, which can now be viewed at Magilligan Point.
